Namie Amuro

Namie Amuro (安室奈美恵, Amuro Namie, born September 20, 1977) is a Japanese recording artist, dancer, model, actress and entrepreneur. A leading figure of the Japanese entertainment industry since the early 90s, Amuro is known for breaking the youthful idol stereotype with her experimentation with different music styles in Japan and throughout the Western world, as well as visual imagery in music videos and on stage. Due to her longevity and resilience within the industry, she is referred to as the "Queen of Japanese Pop" and has constantly been recognized as the Japanese equivalent to leading Western artists such as Madonna and Janet Jackson. Born in Naha, Okinawa, Amuro debuted at age 14 as an idol singer in the band Super Monkey's. Despite early disappointments with sales, she ventured into fashion modeling and acting, attracting domestic attention with the group's best-selling single "Try Me (Watashi o Shinjite)". She signed to Avex Trax in 1995 and debuted as a solo artist with "Body Feels Exit". After two million-selling records—Sweet 19 Blues (1996) and Concentration 20—Amuro released the 1997 single "Can You Celebrate?", which remains the best-selling single by a solo female artist in Japanese music history. From 1999, Amuro partnered with international musicians and producers on her records, the first offering being Genius 2000 (2000). Though music critics noted Amuro's evolution from pop to R&B, the mid-2000s saw a decline in sales, both albums and singles. Play (2007), her eighth studio album, was a period of resurgence in Japanese music for her. Eventually, she moved onto electronic dance music and English language with follow-up records Uncontrolled (2012) and Feel (2013); her eleventh studio album, Genic (2015), is her last studio album, whereas Finally (2017) will be her final overall release of her career. While some parts of her career gained her credit as a songwriter and producer, Amuro has mainly been a studio and touring artist, with many of her releases reaching number-one in Japan. Aside from music, she has appeared on various advertisement campaigns in Japan and worked as a entrepreneur with her own management company, Stella88 and her own record label, Dimension Point. Having sold more than 38 million records in Japan alone, Amuro is recognized as one of the best-selling artists in Japan by Oricon. Her debut solo album Sweet 19 Blues was the best-selling Japanese album for a brief period, and has been noted for her work at several award ceremonies, including being a recipient at the World Music Awards, Japan Record Awards, Japan Gold Disc Awards, among many others. Outside of music, Amuro has one son with her ex-husband Masaharu Maruyama, a member of TRF. On September 20, 2017, Amuro's 40th birthday, she announced that she would retire from the music industry in September 2018.
